"Pawn" is often taken to mean "one who is easily manipulated" or "one who is sacrificed for a larger purpose."

matter what their status in the society, and no matter how wounded they
can get, they willfully get up and stand firm…ever ready to defend
and uphold the so called "larger purpose".
